I am a legal and social historian of modern Africa. My research focuses on histories of law, constitutions, race, gender, class, labor, and property in colonial Africa, the British Empire, and the United States, with particular attention to how law and criminal justice operate in everyday life. Drawing on more than 150,000 abandoned court records that I discovered and helped preserve, my forthcoming book, The People and Their Pursuit of Justice, Right, and Peace, recovers how ordinary Ugandans shaped law through vernacular reasoning and practice.
